CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUNDS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The recent accident to a child who, while running with others across Forbury road, was struck by a tram car, mercifully without fatal results, draws attention again to the danger to themselves and to others that is always threatening children who play on the streets. In most cases there are playing areas or vacant sections handy, so that the use of the streets is not necessary. Motorists and drivers of horse vehicles arc often faced with difficulties owing to the irresponsible movements of young people chasing footballs or cricket balls on the thoroughfares, and pedestrians, especially aged ones, have their troubles by- reason ' of children careering down hill on the footpaths in trollies and scooters. Caversham and St. Clair residents particularly complain of these matters. It is suggested that school teachers, as well as parents, in view of the approaching holidays, might issue warnings, and impress upon the children the wisdom of playing on reserves and spare plots instead of on the public highways, —I am, etc.. Anxious.
