THE DUNEDIN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —“ Carnation ” excites my admiration for hig loyalty to his choice of flowers, but he apparently misses the point in my suggestions. May I again remind him that my suggestions, in an endeavour to assist the Horticultural Society, were written with the idea of creating interest in the flowers which are prominent features of the show benches? The fact that the carnation was Queen Alexandra’s favourite flower, that it has been exhibited in the United Kingdom with gratifying results, and that Mr Cousins has a splendid display does not justify his contention that it should be added to my list. If the attitude towards the Horticultural Society adopted by “ Carnation ” gives any idea of the feelings of carnation lovers in general then it is small wonder that this flower is conspicuous by its absence at the society’s shows. I understand, however, that two cups have been presented to the society for carnation exhibitors, and, no doubt, “ Carnation ” will -welcome the opportunity of demonstrating hig loyalty in a practical manner by supporting the show at which his favourite flower is on exhibition. It is quite within the bounds of possibility that, should support not be forthcoming, these cups may in future be competed for by exhibitors of more popular flowers.— I am, etc., Progress. August 3.
