RUGBY FOOTBALL

OTAGO v.' MARLBOROUGH The first representative match of the season will be played at Carisbrook tomorrow, when an Otago team will play the Marlborough touring team. This is the first occasion on which a Marlborough team has visited Dunedin. A, match was played at Blenheim in 1914, when Marlborough won by 24 points to 5. The Marlborough team includes several jjood players. J. MacDonald (wing threequarter), who has represented the province for five years, was a member of the Maori All Black team which toured the United Kingdom and France. He is captain of the team. H. Phillipps (wing three-quarter) was a member of the Maori team that toured Australia in 1922. W. Haswell (five-eighth) and N. Casey (forward) are both young players, this being their first year as representatives. It. Wilson (full-back or, centre) is a young player of distinct promise and very fast. A. Robinson (five-eighth), D. Lane (five-eighth), nnd.C. Mellish (halfback) are all second-year representatives and are showing great promise. C. Lovell (forward) is the youngest member of the team, being only 17 years of age, and he played his first representative match last year. He is of a. rugged type and should go a long way in Rugby, J. Best, who pfayed for the St. Patrick’s College team last year, weighs over 13 stone and is 19 years of age. L, Patehett is a prominent athlete and was third in the 440 yards Kcw Zealand championship held at Lancaster Park in February last. It will therefore be seen that the team possesses some very promising players, and it is expected to make n good' showing against Otago. The Otago team is considered to be a very solid side, and includes Anderson, one of the country forwards who made snch a good showing against the Southland Sub-union team last Saturday. - The Marlborough team arrived in Dunedin yesterday afternoon by the express front Christchurch, and was welcomed at the railway station by officials of the Otago Rugby Union. The party numbered 29. and was accompanied by Mr J. H. Priddle (chairman of the Marl borough Rugby Uuiou Management Com mittec) as manager, and Mr J. Casey (selector). Mr W. Blagdon has been appointed referee. As a curtain raiser, a very attractive game will be staged by the Third Grade teams University E and High School. Both these teams play bright, open football. Arrangements have also been made to receive progress reports, on the OtagoSonthland match, and those will fa* posted on the scoring board at Cari*»‘ brook as they come to band.
