DOMINION PUBLICITY

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT AMERICAN VISITOR’S OPINION. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 2. Although she is full of praise for what she lias seen of New Zealand, Miss Edith A. Kraeft, of Chicago University, considers that the publicity for the Dominion’s attractions could be much better handled, with far more satisfaction both to tourists and to New Zealanders themselves. Her main contentions made m an interview were that the New Zealand tourist publicity material featured the wrong things, and also put too much stress on the smallness of the country. “ Too much is made in your publicity material of the smallness,” she said. “From it we Americans get the idea that we can come over here and see, it all at once. When we do come we find that the time allowed us makes it necessary to leave out many of the most interesting places. I have been lucky enough to see the West Coast and the glaciers, and I am going to Mount Cook, but 1 am very sorry indeed that I shall have to return without seeing Queenstown, and particularly the West Coast fiords. “Then you feature the wrong things. At the moment the best illustration I can think of is the Bullcr Gorge, because I am particularly ‘ sore ’ about that. I bad been led to expect so much, and yet everything to the south of it is most interesting. “Again one of your publicity sheets will say that something is the most wonderful in the world. It probably is, but we are never told why. Before 1 go I want to say how much I appreciate the hospitality 1 have met everywhere in New Zealand,” she said in conclusion. “It has been really remarkable.”
