WATER SUPPLY SCHEME
TAPPING WAIKATO RIVER PROPOSED SALE TO LOCAL BODIES. v (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, August 2. Plans for the establishment of a new water supply for areas that at present are either inadequately served or have no source of bulk supply are in the course of preparation by a company to be known as the Waikato Water Supply Company, Ltd. it is proposed to draw supplies from the Waikato River and to sell supplies to such local bodies or other interests as desire to purchase the water.
A project of this nature was before the public in 1925 and subsequent years, when an effort was made to form a provincial water board, but under that scheme the financial responsibility was to be carried by the contributing meal bodies. The promoters of the proposed Waikato Water Supply Company, Ltd, have announced their intention of seeking to have a private Bill put through Parliament during the coming session giving them authority to take water from the Waikato River and to establish the necessary works and pipe lines for the carrying out of the project. It is known that,London interests will play a prominent part in the financing of the undertaking, hut the Auckland representatives are at present not prepared to make any definite statement r egarding details.
Overseas engineers, acting in conjunction with local engineers, have made a thorough investigation of the proposal and it is stated that their reports are particularly favourable. They have advised that the scheme would provide an adequate water supply in future for tiie districts through which the proposed pipe line would pass. It is also stated that in due course evidence will be furnished to the Government that the financial stability of the interests behind the project is beyond question.
