AMERICA’S TROUBLES

SERIOUS STRIKE SITUATION SPORADIC VIOLENCE (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, August 1. (Received August 2, at 10 p.m.) The official inauguration to-day of an intensive drive to increase employment through the universal adoption of “ blanket ” codes was partially overshadowed by serious strike situations in some of the leading industries, marked by sporadic violence. Several unrelated strikes in the textile industry are tending to spread, while an acute situation has developed in the bituminous coal districts of Pennsylvania, where some 30,000 miners have been called out, partly due to the refusal of some operators to allow unionisation, although many union men are striking in sympathy with non-union-ists. To-day there were clashes throughout the area, strikers fighting strike breakers and peace officers, and detachments of State militia were called out to preserve order. One striker was killed and several were critically injured. At the Philadelphia hosiery mills 15,000 workers are striking for union privileges, and there is much unrest in the farflung lumber industry, the complexities of which have made formulation difficult. Meanwhile the workers are exceedingly restive. It is said that the strike is against low wages, which in some cases are as little as five cents an hour, for a'l2-hour day.

Dairymen In several sections of New York State to-day clashed with the State police when attempting to stop deliveries of milk unless higher prices were guaranteed. Batons and tear gas were used freely by the officers.
