NEGOTIATIONS FOR RELEASE,

(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 1 (Received Augusts, at 5.5 p.m.)

The British authorities at Newchang have been informed that contact has now been established with the bandits, who are holding in captivity the three British officers who were kidnapped from the steamer Nanchang about four months ago. The prisoners are reported to be well and have been furnished with supplies by intermediaries, through whom negotiations w'ith the bandits are being maintained.

GOVERNMENT TO PAY RANSOM.

LONDON, August 2. (Received August 2, at 8 p.m.) It is understood that the Government has decided to pay the ransom demanded by the Chinese bandits for the release of the three British officers. The sum of £BO,OOO was originally demanded, but it is understood that £OOOO will now suffice and the liberation of the men is expected at any time.
