That extraordinary aquatic animal, the beaver, which has a place on the Canadian coat of arms, under the protection of the law is increasing rapidly in Northern Ontario. The fur of the beaver is valuable, and some years ago the species were being hunted with such vigour that game officials of Ontario became alarmed and prohibited its killing. Seven years ago, with' official approval, Mr Michael Urban Bates established a beaver sanctuary at Mctagama, in Northern Ontario, and to-day the three colonies with which he began have increased to 70, in which, last winter, about 300 beaver made their homes. Mr Bates claims the right to the title of “ beaver king of Ontario,” and perhaps of all Canada. The beaver is a woodsman, a home-builder, and a hydraulic engineer. He stores branches of trees for his winter provender, and constructs elaborate homes of mud strengthened with twigs, carefullv leaving a hole in the top for ventilation and reserving an emergency exit under water. In the summer he regulates his water supply by building substantial dams with the trunks of trees which he cuts down. Mr Bates has made it his mission in life to save the Ontario beaver from extinction. So far his efforts have met with pronounced success.
