Chile is one of the few- countries in the world where the Government acts as official pawnbroker to" its citizens. The Caja de Credito Popular, the State pawnshop, has completed five flourishing years of activity. It was founded during the regime of President Carlos Ibanez, whose administration was marked by a strong tendency toward State Socialism, and is being operated by the present Govern.ment. ‘ The Caja de Credito Popular was first organised because the Government argued that cheaper credit facilities should be- offered to its citizens. At present the State shops are to be found all over the country, and a strict control of private pawnbrokers has been established, with Government inspectors to enforce the regulation*.
