NAZI BRUTALITY

WORLD OPINION OUTRAGED LABOUR LEADER'S CRITICISM (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) BRUSSELS, July SO. Mr W. L. Citrine, in opening the Federated Trades Unions' Congress, expressed whole-hearted approval of President Roosevelt's drive to adjust hours and wages. He trenchantly attacked Hitlerism and Fascism, declaring: "We meet in the shadow of a great tragedy symbolised by the .absence of German trade unionists, many of whom have been brutally maltreated, imprisoned, or exiled. The German workers are gripped by a more ruthless Government than the militaristic autocracy which they overthrew in 1938. World opinion is outraged by Nazi brutality. We must not rest until Hitlerism and Fascism arc overthrown. Unchecked Fascism means war. The world's unemployed now total 30,000,000. Production has fallen, international trade has declined, a- d prices have decreased. The only way of overcoming the crisis is international co-oper-ation, which, owing to the power of economic nationalism, the World Conference failed to secure. The nations must resume the discussions, but needless suffering would have been avoided had the conferring nations forgone national egotism."
