TAIERI RIVER TRUST
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Taieri River Trust was held yesterday. Mr T. M. Ball presided, and Messrs C. Findlay, T. P. Haekett, H. W. Wilson, F. Johnson, J. Dow, W. J. Marshall, and R. B. Tennent were present. REPORTS. The inspector reported that 100 chains of Kirk's drain had been shovelled out. The bridge on the channel at Smith's property (Berkley) had been wing-fenced. The slips on Poplar drain had been cleaned out. A pipe culvert had been inserted in Otokia drain at Taylor's property, and the drain from that culvert to the new cut (12 chains) had been deepened. Mr Marshall's gang had deepened and widened 52 chains of Upper Lee Creek. The banks had been attended to as usual.—Report adopted. The chairman of the Works Committee reported to the trust that aa there was more than sufficient work in hand he had not called the committee together during the month, and in consequence there was no report to make.—Noted. RATES. The necessary resolution for the levying of the rates for the current year was passed, the amounts being an administrative rate of Is and a drainage rate of Is lOd. The Henley and Berwick l special rates were not levied, but all other special rates were fixed as usual. | A motion was also passed levying a repayment rate. CORRESPONDENCE. The city electrical engineer, Dunedin, forwarded copies of correspondence which had recently passed between his, department and the Bruce County Council in connection with the Waipori River banks near Berwick.—A reply to be forwarded that this was a matter for the Bruce County Council to deal, with. Four ratepayers applied for the remission of the 10 per cent, penalty on certain unpaid . rates.—Two of the applications were granted for the full amount, and the others on the portion paid—in view of the special circumstances. P. Bathgate, Outram, complained of work on his drain not being carried out properly.—A reply to be sent that this work was still on the programme of the trust, and would shortly be completed. Messrs Ramsay and Haggitt, solicitors, Dunedin, wrote stating the result of a ratepayer's application for mortgage relief to the State advances superintendent. —The trust decided to take action to have the land sold for the payment of special rates which had been levied before the State Advances Department had taken its mortgage, provided that such a course could be legally pursued. The Commissioner, Unemployment Board, Wellington, forwarded particulars of concession fares for relief workers on trains between railway stations nearest unemployment camps and workers' homes.—Received. GENERAL. The chairman was empowered to sign the amendment to the drainage classification. The Works Committee was asked to report on any additional amendments which might be required to the classification; and .also anywhere a drainage connection would be required, to report on the cost of same. Regarding the conversion of loans it was decided to procure from the State advances superintendent information as to what terms he would agree to for the conversion of the trust's loans held by that department. The question of payment by settlers on the Otokia-Henley area of a pumping rate was again discussed, and was held over for further inquiry. Messrs Ball, Johnson, Marshall,, and the secretary were appointed a deputation to interview the Dunedin City engineer with a view to coming to a definite agreement in connection with the payment for repairs to the power line leading to the trust's pumping station. The Works Committee was asked to attend to the fencing off of a small area where "A" drain entered the main channel, and a similar work at Mr J. M'Kenzie's property. The committee was also asked to pursue the matter of better control of water supply pipes used by ratepayers. It was decided to write to the Berwick Domain Board about a fallen tree causing damage in the Waipori River—-a matter complained of by the Dunedin city electrical engineer.
