THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, JULY 1, 1862. Shipping Intelligence.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

It is understood not to be.the intention to proceed at present with the construction of the electric telegraph from Port Chalmers to the,; Heads. As a private enterprise its profitable character is very doubtful, and it is not likely that the Government will carry it out on their own behalf. It is believed that information of shipping arrivals will be communicated to Port 'Chalmers by a semaphore established at the Heads, in proximity to the present signal station. COMMERCIAL. Dunedin Customs, June 30, 1862. Quarterly Returns of Customs Duties. Gold Exports. The following is the return of gold exported and duty collected at Dunedin for the quarter ending 30th June, 1862: —

The improvement of the breed of, sheep must always and everywhere be a matter of public interest, but more especially so in a community where pastoral pursuits fy)ld so prominent a, place as in Otago; and it is the duty of a public journal to give currency . to any information calculated to promote that object; We have, therefore, much satisfaction in being able to draw attention to the remunerative nature of the pursuit of sheep-breeding when conducted with intelligence. We have before us a memorandum of the prices realised in Melbourne and Sydney for young New Zealand rams and ewes bred by slr. F. D. Rich, .of Moeraki, Otago, by Spanish rams out of Mount Eden ewes. It will be seen that the sales were part in 1861 and part in 1862. The prices of the last two lots are much less than those of last year, but this is accounted for by the fact that those sold this season were only eight months old. - The prices realised were as follows: —Memo, of sales of young rams and ewes, bred by Mr. P. D. Rich, of Moeraki, Otago, and sold in the, Melbourne and Sydney markets during the years 1861 and 1862. : Melbourne, April 6th, 1861.—1 n the Argni of that date; average price, £2B each. Melbourne, January 17th.—See Argus of the 18th, 1862; average price, £25 each.. Sydney, ;May 26, 1862; average price, ewes and ram lambs, eight months old, £l2 10s each. Melbourne, June 13th.—See Argus o.f , the 14th, 1862; lambs, eight and a-half months old; average price, £l3 each. Now that footpaths are being formed, and pavements laid in Dunedin, it is high time that steps should be taken to have them kept clean. In many places the mud lies an inch or more thick on the stone and asphalte pavements, and when it rains this makes-the path nearly as bail to walk on as the road.. . . . With a view to meet the probable increase of shipping at the roadstead of Waikouaiti, consequent upon the gold discoveries of that district, additional facilities for the mooring of vessels and landing of passengers are to be afforded.

A conference of representatives of the Australian colonies is to be held in Melbourne, to see if a uniform tariff cannot be decided on for the whole of the Australian group. Why should not New Zealand be represented—-its tariff requires amendment more than all the others ?
