Friday, June 30. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Magnus Cot-mack Bain, for behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months, on condition that he paid 12, damages to a window. MILKMAN CHARGED. , Two charges were laid against Arthur William Gifford Brown of selling cream which contained formaldehyde.—Senior Sergeant M'Lean said that the inspector, who was an officer under the Sale of Foods Act, took two samples of cream from the defendant. It was found that the cream contained formaldehyde, which was a dangerous drug.—lnspector Fimlon gave evidence. He said the defendant told him he used the formaldehyde as a preservative, ns he understood it was harmless. The cream was otherwise up to standard.—-His Worship eaid it might be that the man was acting honestly, but foolishly. The defendant should have appeared to explain his position. The case was adjourned for a week. WRITING ON FOOTPATH. Archibald Crawford and Eric Powell, young men, charged with writing on the footpath, pleaded guilty.—Senior Sergeant M'Lean said that for some time the police had been trying to put a stop to the practice of writing on footpaths. Many of the notices were calling attention to unemployed meetings. The police did not treat the matter seriously, but desired to stop the practice. The case would serve to bring the matter under the notice of the public.—His Worship dismissed the charges, saying the proceedings would act as a warning. CHIMNEYS ON FIRE. Clara Davidson, for allowing the chimney of her house to catch fire, wag convicted and discharged. Marion Davidson was fined ss. Jesse Minn was fined 5s and cost*. BREACH OF MOTOR REGULATIONS. Murray Leonard Hogg, charged with driving a motor car without a license and with driving an unlighted motor car, was fined 5s and costs on each charge, William Henry Horn, for driving a motor car past a stationary train car, was fined 10s and. costs. Allan John Lockhart and William Alexander M‘Naught, charged with driving motor cars without lights, were each fined 5s aipsd costs. William John MXoughlin, the unlicensed driver of a motor lorry, was fined 5s and costs. For driving unlicensed motor ears, Henry Alston Pye was fined 10s and costs, William Patrick Reid 20s and costs, and Ivan Smart was convicted and discharged. For failing to give way to traffic on the right, Vaughan Goddard, driver of a motor car, was fined 30s and costs. Roy B. Sinclair, an unlicensed motor driver, was fined 15s and costs. UNLICENSED WIRELESS SETS. Leonard Joseph M'Evoy, charged with being in possession of an wireless set, was fined 50s and coats.. John Alexander Ross, similarly charged, was fin§<] 5s and costs. " UNLIGHTED VEHICLE. George Edward Strange, for driving a horse and van without a light, was fined 20b and costs. CHARGE OF DANGEROUS DRIVING. William John Hodge pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving a motor car in a manner dangerous to the public. Mr O. Stevens appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty,—lnspector Cameron said that at a-quarter past 9 on the night of Friday, June 2, he saw the defendant drive his car south along Princes street, pastl the safety zone, at a speed of approximately 30 miles an hour. A number of people were about at the time. When spoken to later, the defendant said ha did not remember the incident.—The defendant, in evidence, said that on the occasion referred to he almost stopped his car at the north end of the safety zone on account of the number of people about. It was not possible that lie could have gone at more than 10 or .12 miles an hour past the zone. No complaint had been made against him-before. —His Worship said there was a doubt in connection with the matter and dismissed the charge. He added that if any driver were convicted of passing the safety zone at 30 miles an hour he would be scverly dealt with.
