PETITIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS j REPORT BY WORKS COMMITTEE. | The Works Committee of the City Council has recently received various petitions from ratepayers with regard to the improvement of suburban streets, and at the next meeting of the council on Wednesday evening reports with respect to these will he submitted as under:— A petition has been received from some 38 ratepayers and residents living in and in the vicinity of Cranston and Sunbury streets, requesting that improvements be effected to those streets. The matter has been investigated and the estimated cost to the council of constructing kerbing, channelling and tarred macadam footways, providing for relief 'labour where possible, is:—4Cranston ! street, west side, lower end, £123; Sun- : bury street, west side, whole length, £263total, £386. As no funds are at present available to meet this amount, these items have been recorded for consideration with the allocations for next year, and. authority has been given for temporary repairs to be carried out in the meantime. Should funds become available later in the present financial year* further consideration will be given to the matter. The petitioners have been advised to this effect. SOMERVILLE STREET. , The committee has received a petition from 38 ratepayers and residents of Somerville street drawing attention to the present condition of the footpath in the street and requesting-that improvements be made thereto. Consideration has been given to the matter, and the estimated cost of constructing kerbing, channelling and tarred macadam footpath along the whole of the west side between Silverton street and Abbotsford road, providing for relief labour, is £413. No funds are at present in hand to meet this amount, but authority has been given for temporary repairs to be effected in the meantime, and the matter of permanent work noted for further consideration later in the financial year. The petitioners have been advised accordingly. TAINUI STREETS. Following a number ,of complaints which have been received relative to the condition of the streets in the Tainui district, a report ' lias been submitted by the city engineer setting out a nrief ! history of this suburb since the year I 1910, when the Bay Town district, of I which Tainui formed a part, amalgamated with the city. This report, which Us laid on the table for the information ■ of the council, indicates that this district has received a very generous allocaj tion of funds yearly for street construc- \ tion and maintenance and drainage purj poses. The estimated cost of completing the k. and g. work is £1050; a j further £1760 will be required for laying down tarred macadam footways, and, it is estimated that £4OO will be requited to complete the grassing of the side margins—a total of £3210. These matI ters have been held over for consideration with the allocations for next financial year, there being no funds available for further- outlay in the district at present.
