DOUGLAS CREDIT ADVOCATES

TO THE EDITOR

Sib, —In this morning’s Daily Times, under the above heading, over the signature of “ Mack,” there appear these words: “The activities of the Douglas convert are very amusing, but it is time to draw the line if. New Zealand is to 'be the laughing stock of the civilised world.” Now, I do not know much about the Douglas system, but at the present time l am trying to learn all I can concerning it. One thing I am quite sure is that we have come to an age when ? the present monetary system has outlived its usefulness. It is essential not only in New Zealand, but throughout the British Empire, that the best brains, irrespective of the individual, get together and devise, a scheme —if not Douglas, then something similar. To all appearances the present slump is about; to lift, but what guarantee have we that 10 years hence or possibly sooner we will not be in the throes of another slump? ■ And when it returns it will strike with greater force than ever before; in fact, I shudder at the thought of how it will leave civilisation. Therefore, it is imperative that some system be devised that will be _ a guarantee against slumps. I do not like the sneer that “ Mack ” throws out about our being the laughing stock of the civilised world. There are good men trying to introduce something that will uplift humanity and put us on a higher plane whilst such persons as “Mack” throw mud D remember away back when Mr Seddon, along with a few of his sviporters, brought in the old age pensions, the women s franchise, and other sane labour schemes i we had our “ Macks ” in those days, and it was only the indomitable will of Mr Seddon that carried them through. Ihe amusing world looked on, but its amusement soon turned to admiration, and it was not long in following our footsteps if we were the laughing stock of the world. —I am, etc., SMACK. Green Island. June 28.
