ST. KILDA BEACH

IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY , The sixth annual meeting of the St.' Kilda Beach Improvement Society was held last . night in the St. Kilda Town Hall. The president (Mr .1. W. Dove! occupied the chair. , , . The ehaflmah stated that the unsuitable weather experienced towards tiie end of last year hud affected, the popularity of the beach to some extent so -far as surf bathing . and picnicking were ' concerned, but as the weather improved the usual crowds had gathered’daily at the beach. The speaker paid a .tribute to the work done during,-the year .by the Domain Board, and said that the pool which had been constructed in front' of the pavilion was proving a fine asset. . The caretaker at the pavilion was doing excellent work, and ably looking after the interests of the society. The society was' working in'the interests of the public, not only of St‘. Kilda, but. of the city as a whole, and it deserved support from all. They had communicated with Air F. Jones, M.P., in regard to receiving a share of the money r’eceivted from the art unions, and he was pleased to state that he was doing his best to secure some money from this source. They did 'not propose, however, to rely solely on this possible source of revenue, and he intended to bring up at a later stage the advisability of holding a carnival of some sort, so that .they could reduce their liability to the'bank. He thought that if the public would only realise fully what a wonderful asset it had, in the beach it would have no hesitation in assisting them in every direction possible.— (Applause.) ’ The treasurer (Mr H. H. Leary) said that he was pleased to state-that they had made a small profit oh the,.'year’s working. It only came to £3 lls 4d. but last year they had sho\vn a loss. Their greatest outlay was in interest ; to the bank—£4o 16s 6d. Their actual cash balance was £36 Is Bd. ~ , The chairman said it was very gratifying to see that the revenue from the hire of the boxes and costmhes, etc., came to £27 7s 6d. '* The balance sheet was adopted., Mr J. Wilson, chairman of the Domain Board, said that the board intended to plant a belt of trees behind the pavilion to -prevent the sand coming across. Before > the‘close of the year the tip would have reached the boundary line of the society’s area, and they w r ould have to see that .the refuse .was well covered up. He thought that the St. Kilda Borough Council could assist in this direction by giving the hoard the sweepings from the- streets. When the tip had reached the boundary he had referred to the board intended to start again from the other end and raise -the level still further. The board was pushing on. with improvements as quickly as it could with the funds, it had in hand, and he thought they i would see an advancement in this connection during the coming year.—(Applause.) The Mayor of rStiM Kilda (Mr J. Beattie) said he would look "into the question of allowing the board a greater pi-oportion of the street sweepings than it had previously, received. ;; OFFICE-BEARERS.
