DUNEDIN ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY
A programme that should appeal to all lovers of good orchestral music will be presented in His Majesty’s 'theatre by the Dunedin Orchestral Society tormorrow evening. As Mr Alfred Walmsley, the society’s conductor, has resigned, this will be his last concert, and he has chosen several of his fayourite items for the occasion. Mozart is represented by the beautiful “II Seraglio” overture, while, Haydn’s exquisite “Clock ” Symphony will also be played. The delicacy and melodiousness of Haydn’s orchestrations make liis music among the most liked to-day, and the orchestra excels in this composer’s and Mozart’s works. Mendelssohn’s effective overture to “ The' Son and Stranger” will be a more vigorous item, while two new additions to the library in Thomas Dunhill’s “Tambourine Dance / and the Sibelius “ Valse Lynque ” will be light and interesting. The selection is from Meyerbeer’s “ Les Huguenots.” Assisting as soloists will be Miss Dorothy Mackay, whose dainty and artistic singing is always a delight, singing two beautiful Hebridean airs, “The Troutling of the Sacred Well” and “Land of Heart’s Desire”: Miss Ruth Sell, whose rich, full contralto should give great expression to “Deep River” and “I Got a Home,” two negro spirituals; and Mr E. Ottrey, the possessor of a resonant baritone, voice, who will sing Nelson’s popular “The Windmill.” In addition to these vocal items, Miss Mackay and Mr Alfred Walmsley will sing the operatic duet, “Speak to Me of My Mother” (“Carmen ”).
