CHRISTIAN BROTHERS STILL LEADING ATHLETIC’S IMPROVED FORM In a fast, open game Christian Brothers defeated, Pacific by 22 points to 13 on the Oval on Saturday afternoon. It was one of the best Rugby League games witnessed this season. Some splendid passing movements were seen among the backs of both sides. City and Athletic met at Chisholm Park, but the game was not interesting. City won through superior play by the backs, but one of the features of the game was the improved form shown by the Athletic team. In the first few minutes Chiistian Brothers carried play to Pacific’s twentyfive, and, following loose play near the line, J. O’Connor went over to score near the corner. He missed with the kick Pacific retaliated, but the Greens cleared, and play wag returned to Pacific’s twentyfive, Foote and Blackwood were prominent in a great rush down the touch line. The Pacific forwards followed up the,, advantage, and Aston forced his way across to score; M'Lennan failed with the kick. A minute . later Lovelock scored for the Greens, B. O’Connor failing with the kick. The Pacific backs gave Blackwood a good share of the ball, and he scored ' a fine try near the posts. Foote converted. Reid later broke through for Pacific, and an infringement by a Green forward gave Foote a chance to kick an easy goal. After a period of loose play, Schmelz went over between the posts to score a try, which B. O'Connor converted. The scores at half time were:—Christian Brothers 11 points, Pacific 10 points. A few minutes after the game was resumed Schmelz dashed over near the corner, T. O’Connor failing with the kick. The Grefin backs were playing with splendid combination, and at length M'Kewen accepted a pass and cut through to score at the posts. O’Malley, was successful with the, kick. A little latgr. Blackwood secured and scored a determined try .at the corner. Foote failed with the kick. Pacific made desperate efforts to scohe again, but M'Kewen broke away. He was backed up by T. O’Connor, and after considerable ground had been gained the ball was sent out to Schmelz. who scored. B. O’Connor just missed With the kick. Pacific struggled hard to regster a lastminute try. but there was no further addition to the scores, the game ending: Christian Brothers .. 22 points. / Pacific 13 points. “ Mr B. Eckhoff was referee. CITY v. ATHLETIC The teams were as follows: City.—Barbara, Nelson, Hopcraft, Hayden, Richards, Watts, Taylor, Bartholomew, Ginders, F. Heller, W. Heller, Grenfell. Athletic.—M'Donald, Martin, Arrandale, Gray, Harewood, Anderson, Munro, Lawless, Crosado, Tobin, Townsend. Athletic attacked strongly from the kick-off, City , being penned on their line for some minutes. A penalty to Athletic in front of City’s goal was taken by M'Donald, who made no mistake. City had a. brief respite, but play was soon returned to the other end, where Townsend made a fine opening for Munro to score. M'Donald converted. City then attacked, and swept down the field in a strong rush, and W. Heller scored near the posts. Nelson was successful with the kickl Athletic again returned to the attack, and play removed to City’s territory, but the next minute W. Heller and then Nelson broke through the defence, the latter going over to score an easy try, which he converted. Another attack by City caught the opposition out of position, and Grenfell scored at the corner. Hayden failed with the’kick. ' When half time was called play was in City’s, territory, ’ City 13 points, Athletic 6 points. Some fairly, even play marked the opening of the second spell. City then swept through in a movement which ended in Ginders scoring in a-good position. Nelson failed to convert. Gray then made a fine opening, running well down the line before passing to Munro. When tackled the latter sent the ball on to Townsend, who scored a good try behind the posts. Loades converted. After, some up and down play the City backs started a movement which ended in Barbara cutting through to score a good try, which he failed to convert.
