MEN’S COMPETITION UNIVERSITY A DEFEATS ALBANY Men's hockey was , played at the Oval under very suitable weather conditions on Saturday afternoon. The Albany team, I which had been hitherto unbeaten, was I narrowly defeated by University A, thus i making vhese teams level at the top of j the competition. . The first draw’ of the | season occurred in the game between High School Old Bovs A and Technical, and High School Old Boys B boat University B by the odd goal in nine. UNIVERSITY A v. ALBANY University A and Albany met at Oval No. 1, which was in a fairly heavy condition. It was a hard-fought game _ all the way, with University slightly superior, and the final score of 2 goals to 1 in their favour fairly represented the run of . the play. Albany attacked right at the whistle and came dangerously close to scoring, but a twenty-five resulted, and University set up a series of attacks which had the play concentrated in and about Albany’s circle for a good length of time. The students forced several corners, and a number of shots by Belfield were blocked. University continued on the attack, with Botting, Cawkwell, and Stevenson prominent, until more than half the spell was gone, 'when Albany broke away, and Densem, beating the University defence, scored with a shot that loft the goal-keeper little chance of saving. Albany 1, University nil. Albany maintained the pressure, and when in a good position Rennick shot over .the top of the goal. Following this University set up a movement which saw Twose, the Albany goalkeeper, save a hard shot. The students kept at it, however, and were rewarded when Stevenson accepted a well-placed centre from the right and scored, making the scores level at half time. University assumed the_ offensive on the resumption, and for a time they looked very like scoring, only the sterling work of Twose and Whitburn, right in the goal mouth, preventing them. Albany then took another turn at attack, with Ainger, Thomson, and Rennick prominent, but their efforts lacked finish when they came within scoring distance, and they found the University defence too strong. A period of up-and-down play followed until the students again had Albany penned on their own line, when Walton, the rightwing, lobbed the ball to the goal mouth for Stevenson to rush in and score with a great effort. University 2, Albany 1. Towards the end of the game Albany made desperate efforts to equalise, and the University goal-keeper was called on to stop a hard shot, but the position was relieved, and the game ended shortly afterwards with the scores: University A .. .. 2 goals. Albany .. .. ?...; 1 goal. Messrs W. M‘Queen and H. Sew Hoy were the referees. ’ '' ' ! ■ ! TECHNICAL OLD BOYS v. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS A Technical Old Boys and High School Old Boys A met at Oval No. 2 under ideal weather conditions, but on a ground that was sticky and soft and not conducive to good hockey. From the initial bully High School attacked, and Harris in relieving gave sticks. From the resulting free hit Martin received and opened the score with at good shot, Within the first two minutes of play. This early reverse stung Technical, who set up a series of attacks in the High School circle, but stout defence by Brebner and Penny kept the goal intact. Up and down play followed, neither team being able to finish off its efforts. Eventually Technical broke away and after good passing by the forwards, Grant obtained possession and scored with a strong rising shot which gate Duckworth no chance toj save. Play continued fast, each team attacking, hut half-time was called without ariy addition to the score. On resumption Technical pressed and gave High School an anxious few minutes until Gurr relieved. High School then set up a hot attack, but dogged defence kept them out. A fast Technical attack by Churchill, Sew Hoy, and Grant saw the last-named lose the ball when in a good scoring position. High School again retaliated and gave the defence a busy time for several minutes, only splendid work by Pickup, Veiteh, and Harris preventing them from scoring. Numerous corners were conceded to High School, but each proved fruitless, the defence being too sound. Martin was unlucky when from a rising shot straight, in front. Pickup tipped the ball over the cross bar. Technical then returned play to midfield and the final whistle "was blown with the score:— . Technical Old Boys ... 1 goal High School Old Boys A- 1 goal Messrs Hewitt and Wheatley were the referees. '. ■ " HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS B v. UNIVERSITY B In the game between High School Old Boys B and University B. played at Oval No. 3, which was somewhat greasy, the former bad the better of the first half, and led by three goals to one at halftime. In the second half University scored again, bringing the score to 3-2, after which Old Boys added another goal. University then livened up, and managed to score, hut > towards the end of the game, when Old Boys were nressing hard. Gray shot, the ball bouncing off the University goal-keeper’s pads for Hanning to rush in and score a pood goal. The final score was:— High School Old Boys .. 5 goals University B ... ... 3 goals The referees were Messrs R. Butler and E. Calder. THIRD GRADE Technical 0.8. 14, 0.8.H.5. nil. LADIES’ GAMES POSITIONS OF TEAMS ■ The positions of the teams are as fol- I lows:—Otago 14 points, Monoma 9 points, University 9 points. Dunedin 5 points, Technical Old Girls 5 points, Otago Girls’ High School 1 point. TECHNICAL v, MOMONA In the game between Technical and Momona Monoma attacked from the bullyoff, and had Technical on defence. The play was very even for some time. After | about 15 minutes’ play Momona opened the scoring, Miss 0. Sonness netting a good goal. Technical attacked strongly, but spoilt good play by too much obstruction. The play for the remainder of the spell was fairly even. The second spell opened at a fast pace, Technical having Momona on defence for some time, but they spoilt some good opportunities by over-eagerness. The Technical forwards still kept Momona on defence, and at last scored. Momona 1, Technical 1. Momona now put more dash into their play, but were also penalised for obstruction. After i a good deal of even play Miss Henderson scored with a strong shot, Momona 2, Technical 1. Technical attacked strongly, but could not penetrate the defence, Miss Wilson playing a good game for Momona at full-back, breaking up many solid forward rushes. Mis s Gallon put Momona still further ahead with a splendid goal, the game ending:— Momona .. .. .. .. 3 goals. Technical 1 goal. Mr M- Cameron was referee. OTAGO v. DUNEDIN Otago and Dunedin played a well-con-tested game on Oval No. 1, where conditions were good. Otago had the pressure on early in the first spell, but continued i offside play spoiled many promising' efforts. 'Otago netted on two occasions from close play in the circle, the Dunedin j backs having a busy time. The Reds made some likely movements, but the Otago backs wore safe, and the halves tackled well. The half time score was:

Otago, 2, Dunedin nil. In the second spell the play was bright and fast, the Dunedin half line tackling well to Bton many good Otago attacks. Again offside play spoiled chances. The Dunedin forwards lacked sting, and found dlfhculty in passing the Otago backs. A very interesting game resulted: — Otago 2 goals. Dunedin .. .. .. .. Nil. Mr D. Miller controlled the game. UNIVERSITY v. HIGH SCHOOL In the early stages of a fast and interesting game High School looked to have a great chance of beating University. The halves were tackling well, and the Blue forwards could do nothing right. The School attack, however, lacked the sting required to score many goals, and though sorely troubled at times managed to stave off the School attack. Later in the game the University forwards made determined attacks on the School goal, and it was only really good defence by the School backs which kept the score down. A fast game under good conditions resulted: — University 4 goals. High School 1 goal. Messrs J. Martyne and D. Miller were efficient referees. B GRADE University 2. West Harbour 2. Technical College 2, Technical Old Girls 1. Momona 5, Otago nil. C GRADE Momona 4, West Harbour 2. Y.W.C.A. nil. Dunedin nil. Taieri 2, University 1.
