CHIEF RAILWAYS ENGINEER
MR BERTINSHAWS CAREER Mr 6. J. Bertinshaw, assistant chief engineer, who had been appointed ciiief engineer of the New Zealand railways, in succession to Mr E. Casey, who was promoted last month to be assistant general manager, has had a very comprehensive experience of railway engineering. Joining the service at Wellington head'office in 1904, he was transferred, after some time, to the district engineer’s office at Wanganui, where he remained until 1913. During his stay at Wanganui many large railway works were undertaken. Whilst there, Mr Bertinshaw passed his A.M.I.C.E. examination in 1913, being then transferred to Wellington, where, amongst other duties, he was engaged on the preliminary survey in connection with the Tawa Flat deviation.
. In 1914 Mr Bertinshaw transferred as assistant engineer to Invercargill, where he remained until 1920, when he was transferred to Wellington as assistant district engineer. Mr Bertinshaw was appointed district engineer at Wanganui in 1924/ and in 1925 was promoted to the position of inspecting engineer, head office. In this position Mr Bertinshaw gained a very comprehensive knowledge of all parts of the Dominion railways, as his duties involved work in connection with every section. For 18 months he acted as assistant chief engineer during the absence abroad of the chief engineer and the assistant chief’ engineer. In 1931 came his appointment as assistant chief engineer, a position he has occupied till his present appointment.
