RAIN IN LONDON
OPEN-AIR FUNCTIONS SPOILED DISPLAY AT AIR FORCE PAGEANT (United Press Association.) ( (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 24. (Received June 25, at 8.10 p.m.) A downpour of rain spoilt the huge programme of open-air functions, and enforced the cancellation of the King’s review of the London Territorials in Hyde Park. His Majesty, regretting the cancellation, paid a tribute to the patriotism of the men and their employers, and said he hoped to see the parade in the early future. The sporting events abandoned included the Queen’s Club finals, while the Air Force pageant at Hendon was robbed of much of its attractiveness. Although the programme was curtailed three “ Furies ” made a courageous display, despite the poor visibility, and soared through the pelting rain at 200 miles an hour with their wings barely 30 feet apart. Rolling, looping, andzooming, they were often invisible among the storm clouds. Similarly, although the bad visibility enhanced the difficulties of keeping the correct distance, nine aeroplanes, linked by cables to which streamers were attached, exhibited complicated manoeuvres.
