OTAGO HUNT CLUB

SUCCESSFUL MEET AT EAST TAIERI.

The weather was fine, but dull and overcast, with a cold northerly wind, for the Otago Hunt Club’s weekly meet, which was held at East. Taieri on Saturday afternoon over the properties of Messrs J. Tregilgus, F. Pickering, J. Douglas, and Janies Dnnery, who had kindly placed their properties at the club’s disposal. Great interest was taken in the hunt as evidenced by the fact that when the throw-off took place the Main South road, from which an excellent view of the hunt was obtained, was lined with motor cars and spectators. There was a large turnout of followers, including several from the country, and some very good jumping was witnessed. A scene of great activity was wilnessed on the road at the rear of the Moegiel railway station, where some 40 odd horses were waiting in readiness for the hunt to commence. The trail

having been laid the pack was sent away about 3.15 p;m.; and picking up the scent quickly, set off at a good pace to the first jump, a post and rail in Mr Tregilgus’s property, which was well Cleared by all. Continuing, the followers then had to jump a gorse hedge and another post and rail, a bit of baulking took place here, but all eventually got over. A gorse hedge was then cleared, which brought the field into Mr Pickering's property, where a fairly stiff double, consisting of a post and rail and gorse hedge, had to be negotiated.- This, cleared, the followers through a gate in Mi, Douglas's'(property/, and jumped a forse hedge from the road into Mr >unery’s property. This jump, although not very high, was nevertheless tricky, as there, was only a short run to, the jump, and the landing wag higher than the take-off. However, only two fell at this jump on landing but were not injured. Continuing on through Mr Duncry’s paddocks, two post and rails were jumped and then came four solid Hawthorne hedges, the last of these causing the followers the miost trouble, owing to a bad dip on landing. The falls here were many, but fortunately neither riders nor horses were injured. The kill took place near Mr Dunery’s homestead. Miss Mary Statharn, who has been riding exceptionally well this season, gained the honour of being the first lady in at tne “kills' and thus received the coveted brush. Graball and Diamond Jack, who are qualifying for the Hunt Club Steeplechase in September, put up very good performances. At the conclusion of the hunt, Mrs Dunery and Miss Burley very kindly entertained the followers at afternoop tea, which was much appreciated. Before leaving on the homeward trail, the .master (Mr J. E. Brunton) briefly thanked the-property owners for the use of their fine properties for the hunt, and also Mrs Dunery and Miss -Burley for providing the afternoon tea.
