THE KAWARAU DAM

GATES TO BE CLOSED NO DEFINITE PERIOD ANNOUNCED Mr H. Credgiugton, a director of the Amalgamated Kawarau Gold Mining Company, Limited, announced yesterday that the company proposes to close the gates of the dam at Franklin on Monday in order to permit the company’s engineers to make soundings of the depth of the water coming from the Shotover and Arrow rivers. This work is necessary in connection witli the plans for the new dam which is to be erected _ just below the junction of the Kawarau and Arrow rivers. Mr Credgiugton was unable to give any indication of the period for which the gates will be closed, and it is consequently impossible to say whether the effect rif the closing of the dam will be of much benefit to the prospectors who have been waiting, on the banks of the river for a fall which will enable them to reach the gold. Last year, the company permitted fossicking on the banks of the Kawarau River in the area controlled by the company, the understanding being that the prospectors, should give some indication of the results obtained. There was practically no response to this, and the company has not yet decided whether it will give the same permission again. Mr Credgington also announced that the company’s affairs are moving satisfactorily and that it is hoped that-the statutory meeting, when all preliminary arrangements will be completed, will be held within the next two or three weeks'.
