SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS (From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, June 23. Something in the nature of a small gold rush has set in to the Tuapeka Mouth and Upper Greenfield districts, consequent on the reports of promising finds made near the Tuapeka River where it debouches into the Molyneux. The seekers after gold hove spread over the boundary into Greenfield, and, in addition, to the holding of Mr Charles Lucas, have gone on to the property of Mr J. Cross, where every creek is receiving attention. Old residents are somewhat sceptical regarding the possibility of the field developing to any extent, and state that while those who are engaged at the upper (or Tuapeka Mouth) end may do well, those at the Greenfield end cannot hope for much., The land there has been well prospected before, and worked in some. places for very small returns. Some 20 years ago there was a email “ rush ” to Greenfield, where the Andersens and other experienced gold diggers from Tuapeka Mouth staked out claims and worked them for a time. RISE IN STOCK PRICES. Farmers to-day were jubilant at the prospect of, better prices for live stock, as evidenced at to-day’s sale, when Mr Cochrane, buying for Borthwick and Son’s Belfast Freezing Works, secured the bulk of the fat lamb and sheep yarding. Others competed strongly too, and rival buyers secured some good lines at prices as much as 4s and 5s a head better than have hitherto prevailed this season. Those who sold lambs “on the hoof ” earlier in the Reason are now regretting that they had not joined the “ pool ” and consigned direct to the Home market, where prices have firmed recently. CHAMPION COLLIE DOG. At the recent South Island Championship Dog Trials at Mossburn, the winner of the championship short head and yard. was Don, owned by Mr L. G. Tilson, of Paretai. Don was bred, trained, and worked at the trials by his owner. The dog also won the 15 guinea shield and a silver cup at the Clutlia •meeting. The owner lias now received an offer for the dog to go to Melbourne with the idea of participating in the Victorian trials.
