ABORTIVE FREIGHT CONFERENCE HQPES OF COMPROMISES. SYDNEY, June 22. Having failed to reach an agreement on the question of reductions in freight rates between Australia and the United Kingdom and the Continent, the annual council of the Australian Overseas Transport Association adjourned sine die. Although the conference proved abortive, hopes that some compromises may be reached between the shipowners and the exporters of refrigerated produce have not been abandoned. The meat exporters asked for reductions to bring them level with the New Zealand, rates on all lines except beef, and the shipowners refused to grant them. A cable message was sent to London, and a reply stating that the New Zealand rates could not be given was read to the council. It . is understood that the representatives of the shipowners offered some concession, but this was not acceptable to the shippers. THE TARIFF DEBATE GOVERNMENT’S SECOND REVERSE. CANBERRA, June 22. Deserted by 13 of its members, who voted for an amendment by the Country Party, the Government suffered a second defeat in the Senate on the tariff within two days. STOP VALVE BURSTS A FIREMAN KILLED. MELBOURNE, June 22. Fireman Edward Murphy (48), a Canadian, is dead, and Fireman George Day (44), a Scotsman, was critically injured as the result of a stop-valve on one of 1 the boilers of the steamer Candian Conqueror bursting shortly after the ship entered the Yarra. The two men were the only members of the crew in the stokehold at the time of the explosion. The engines were stopped, and tugs towed the Canadian Conqueror to her berth.
