BRITISH TARIFF POLICY
DEFENCE IN HOUSE OF LORDS OUTLINE OF BENEFITS (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 22. (Received June 22, at 8.30 p.m.) In tlie House of Lords the Earl of Stanhope, replying to an attack on Government tariffs by Lord Arnold and Lord Ponsonby, said that without tariffs it would have been impossible to adjust Britain’s trade balance, and the people of Britain would have been faced with starvation. Tariffs were only papt of the Government’s policy. It was 5 endeavouring to obtain Freetrade throughout the world, and felt that it now had a bargaining weapon. It would have been impossible to see the World Economic Conference without the imposition of British tariffs. When Great Britain was a free dumping ground foreign nations were content. When they realised that they were shut out of the British market they thought it worth while to confer and see if something could be done to improve the trade, credit, and exchange position.
