LOCAL ACTIVITIES THE MAYOR’S APPEAL At yesterday’s meeting of the committee sot up to assist the Mayor in his appeal for £IO,OOO for the relief of distress, the following resolution was curried “ That this v meeting affirms the principle that this fund is for the general relief of distress and will be distributed by the Mayor’s relief organisation througn the district depots, supervised by the Advisory Finance Committee, consisting of Messrs A. C. Matheson (chairman), P. R. Sargood, P. L. Halsted, J. Hogg, J. Begg and J. Farquharson. Contributors to this fund will be exempt from any other claims, with the exception of those of their own church or social organisations.” No. 4 DEPOT , ’ The Women’s Committee of the No. 4 Relief Depot started work last week in a room at the back of the Salvation Army Hall, King Edward street. The depot will be open Lrom 2.30 to 4.30 p.m. each Tuesday and Friday. The committee gratefully acknowledges receipt of all parcels sent in. There is a great need for all kinds of clothing and boots. RELIEF OF DISTRESS BENEFIT TROTTING MEETING. I Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 22. The three trotting clubs in Christchurch—the New Zealand Metropolitan, the Canterbury Park and the New Brighton —have agreed to apply for a special permit for joint trotting meeting to, raise funds for the relief of distress. The date suggested is October 14. ■ i ’ AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL LOAN OF £120,000 AUTHORISED. (Per ,United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 22. Resolutions authorising the raising of a loam of £121,450 for unemployment relief works were adopted by the City Council, to-nigbt. The period of the loan it not to exceed 33 years , and the rare of interest, will; be 4:} per cent. The money will be spent on drainage, waterworks, and street improvements.
