TARIFF REVISION
EVIDENCE BEFORE COMMISSION DUTIES ON MEN’S CLOTHING. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 22. A joint case on behalf of the manufacturers of men’s clothing was presented by the Tariff Commission to-day. It was requested that the tariff item “ Apparel ” should be subdivided to provide for: —(1) Apparel, wool or containing wool; (2) apparel, n.e.i. That the tariff on the first be 33J per cent. British preference, and C 5 per cent, general, with a minimum flat rate per garment, to be decided by the Minister of Customs in conjunction with his dealing with dumping. On the second it was asked that the present tariff of 27£ per cent, be maintained; that primage be removed from tailors’ trimmings, and the duty be reduced on braids used in the manufacture of garments.
In the course of the discussion on many points, Mr G. Pascoe pointed out that the primage duty was imposed for revenue purposes, and he did not think the commission could lift it for one section of the community only.
