BURNS CLUB

ANNUAL BASKET SOCIAL The annual basket social of the Dunedin Burns Club was combined with the monthly concert last night, when there was a very large attendance of members and friends, the seating capacity of the Early Settlers’ Hall being completely occupied. The president of the club (Mr A. M. Love) expressed his gratification at seeing so large an audience, and extended a welcome to the president of, the Early Settlers’ Association (Mr J, J. Mallard), who later suitably responded. The occasion was taken to say farewell to Mr Frank Watt, who is well known in Dunedin musical circles, and who will leave this morning on the first stage of his journey to Scotland. On behalf of Begg’s Concert Party and a nutfiber of Druidic friends Mr J. Himburg made a presentation to Mr Watt, and in doing so expressed regret at Mr Watt’s departure. The speaker wished him a pleasant voyage, and stated that he hoped that Mr Watt would later see his way clear to return to the Edinburgh of the South. Mr Love also extended the good wishes of the Burns Club, and the audience sang “ For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow ” and “Auld Lang Syne,” The following programme was presented, the items_ reaching a high standard and recalls being numerous;—Selection, Dunedin Highland Pipe Band: Song, “ Cameron Men,” Mr Arthur Macdonald: Reel o’ Tulloeh—Misses Olive and Maise Scott, Lorna Budge, and May. Wilson: song. “Auld Scotch Sangs.” Mrs D. Carty; Scottish Airs, Begc's Orchestra j duet, “ Hunting Tower.” Mrs D. Carty and Mr F. Watt; musical monologue. “The Grave Digger’s Wedding.” Mr Clarence Paine: song. “We’re a* Scottish Here,” Mr F. Watt: “Community Land,” Begg’a Orchestra. The musical director was Mr F. C. Conner and the accompanist was Mr A. Pettit. At the conclusion of the concert a dance was held.
