SALVATION ARMY MEETING Under the auspices of the Salvation Army a meeting was held yesterday at which some 400 women were present. Th'ese represented largely those who have felt most severely the effects of the prevailing' depression with its resultant unemployment,, and the purpose of the meeting was to provide an atmosphere of comfort and cheer which would help them in their daily struggle against circumstances. Mrs Bear occupied the chair, and Mrs W. Don conducted the prayers. An enjoyable programme of songs and recitations was presented, and a brief address was given by StaffCaptain E. Davies. The subject was “ Handfuls of Blessing,” and in the course of her remarks the speaker dealt with a number of interesting personalities whom she had encountered in the course of her work in England, Scotland and Canada, including .the former head of the Salvation Army, General Bramwell Booth. She also spoke of life in the slums of London, and showed how, even under the most difficult conditions, there were people to be met whose lives were, literally “handfuls of. blessings.” ' ■ THE SERVICES QUEEN Mrs Nora Ross, a member of the Otago Hospital Board, has been chosen as tin* Services queen for the forthcoming queen carnival, to be held for the purpose of raising funds for the relief of distress.
