Burdett) occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the Weston branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, when there was a very large attendance,. The president extended a welcome to four new members. It was decided to . co-operate with the Windsor Park. Institute in endeavouring to obtain a cheap bus fare on one day in the week. A very fine display of useful articles of clothing made by members to be sent to the relief depot was inspected, and Mrs Campbell offered to deliver the. gifts. ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT.

WAITAKI HYDRO NOTES At a meeting of the committee of the Waitaki Hydro Tug-of-war Club it was decided to hold a carnival on July 21 and 22 for the purpose of raising funds to furnish the gymnasium and purchase tug-of-war equipment, and, also to foster all classes of sport at Waitaki Hydro. The following have been added to the original committee:—Messrs , W. Curran, M. Naismith, P. Lynch. C. J. Burns, W. A. Johnson, E. S. Wills, J. Freeman, and J. Miller. The function will be governed by the rules of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, with which the club is affiliated. ; An attractive programme is being arranged, and the secretary (Mr F. Fowler) is in communication with clubs in Dunedin, Central and South Otago, and Tiraaru. The teams at the Hydro are at present in training, and are looking forward to some good pulls with the visitors. TOtARA P.W.M.U. A “bring and buy” sale will be held by the Totara P.W.M.U. and Guild in the Totara Hall on Saturday . night, commencing. at 7 o’clock. There will be a variety of stalls, including produce, baking, fancy, and sweets, and games and competitions should also add to the success of the evening. KITCHEN EVENING v. T There) wap a large attendance of . members of’the Loyal Band }; of- Friendship Lodge, and also Kakanui residents, in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Kakanui, ou the occasion of a kitchen evening tendered to Miss Oats, on the eve of her approaching marriage. A very happy evening was spent by all in dancing and playing cards, and during an interval in the proceedings Mr Leo Dougherty presented Miss Oats - and Mr W. G. Wilson with the splendid collection*of useful articles given by their friends. On behalf of those present, Mr Dougherty wished the young couple every success and prosperity in the future,, and “ For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” was sung. Mr Wilson, on behalf of Miss Oats and himself, thanked the members and friends for their good wishes and the splendid and varied collection of useful articles which would always remind them of their many Kakanui friends. A very enjoyable supper was provided by the lodge members, and was much appreciated. Mr E. Jones carried?put the duties of M.C., and Mr J. LeeP provided good music,' Miss Tosh playing an extra. Bert Wheeler and Robert Wooleey carry, practically all , the action in this picture, WAITAKI HOSPITAL BOARD ■The/.-monthly meeting of the Waitaki Hospital Board was held yesterday, there being present;—Mr J. Rodman (chairman), Mesdames J. M. Forrester, T. A. Munro, Messrs W. Forrester, D. J. Ross, A. MTijnes, and the Rev. A. H. Nordtneyer. A resolution was passed that the board’s resolution giving Mr W. Smith a rebate of per ognt. for prompt payment of rent, should only have effect during the pleasure of the board. It was agreed to carry out alterations to the offices .as recommended by the secretary in ‘ accordance with the plan submitted, an amendment by-Mrs J. M. Forrester to alter the plan lapsing for want of a seconder. " Mrs Forrester’s dissent to the resolution was recorded. Accounts totalling .£1406 10s 9d were passed for payment. , The Otago Hospital Board wrote in reference to the recent conference about the proposed new reciprocal agreement. The South Canterbury Board wrote in reference to the same subject.—-The secretary’s action in furnishing the particulars desired was approved. The North Canterbury Hospital Board wrote in reference to the charges for operations or anaesthetic J fees for inpatients—The secretary reported that he had replied that the Waitaki Board did not charge such fees to in-patients, his action being approved. The Waitaki Hydro Medical Association forwarded £sl 13s 4d for cemtribution due to the board.—lt was decided to inquire from Mti R- H. Packwood as to the position of the relief workers being engaged at the works. Tfie Nurses and Midwives’ Registration Board wrote asking for information as to the standard of education reached by the average applicant in the hospital.—The secretary reported that the information desired had been furnished, his action being approved. ' The Department of Heath wrote in reference to the high pressure steriliser at the Kurow Hospital, loan repayment, annual returns 1932-33, and the proposed electrical heating system. . The secretary reported that owing to the fact that t!»« board’s estimates had been returned by the department stating that provision must be made during the present year for repayment of the loan, it was thought desirable that the chairman and secretary should visit Wellington to discuss with the director-general both loan repayments and heating. The department had now withdrawn its objection to art extension of the period for repayment of the loan. The department was agreeable, to the installation of any efficient ward-licating system, which could lie installed without exceeding the board’s estimate of £2OO by too great a margin. A« the heating of the wards was considered an urgent matter, they had arranged for the installation of the Chromalox vertical wall type heaters. The chairman reported! fully on his visit to Wellington, and on the steps taken to reach finality in these matters. The actions of the chairman and secretary were approved, and they were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their services. The superintendent of the Oamaru Hospital reported that there were 73 patients in hospital at: the beginning of the month. 103 were admitted, 86 discharged, 6 died,

leaving 84 .remaining at the end of the month. The number of operations was -70. Gifts were acknowledged from Mr Stringer, Mr Jeffery, Dr Fitzgerald, Miss Banks, and Miss Lindsay. * The matron of the Kurow Maternity Hospital reported that nine patients were admitted during the month, seven were discharged, leaving five patients at the end of the month. The out-patients numbered 4. The matron pf Victoria Home reported that there were, 20 inmates at the beginning of the month, 32 were admitted or re-admitted, 31- were discharged, leaving 21 remaining- at-the. end of the month. Gifts were acknowledged from Mrs A. Orr (Totara), Miss Marwick; Mrs Spence, Mr W. C. Naylor. Mr G., Stringer, Toe H., Star of the North Lodge, Awamoa Ladies’ Bowling Club. The' t Salvation Army entertained the old folk, at a concert. which was much appreciated by all. In the fat sheep section extra prime ewes realised 15s to 16s 3d; prime ewes, 12s 6d to 13s 6d; medium ewes. 9s to 10s fld; light, ewes, 7s 6d to 8s 6d; prime fatJambs, 15s 3d to 17s 6d; two pens fat wethers, 17s 6d to 20s 3d. Mixed-sex store hoggets sold at 8s 7d, and two pens of halfbred ewes were passed. There was a small, entry of pigs, the best weaners brought 10s to 11s Cd: medium weaners, 5s to 7s Cd; porkers, 16s to 20s 6d. HERBERT NOTES The Herbert Hockey and Lawn Tennis Clubs held a very successful dance in the hall, which was artistically decorated for the occasion. Excellent music was supplied by Mr Noel Robertson (Waianakania), extras-being played by Mr Gillespie, Misses V. Cameron, and A. Paterson. Mr M. Wilson carried out the duties of M.C. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr J. Budge and Miss Gray, and the lucky spot by Mr J. Davis and Miss Cameron .VA' very enjoyable supper was served by, the ladies. There was a, good attendance at the annual school reunion social and dance, Mr A. J; Ross extending a hearty welcome to those present. During the evening songs were sung by Mrs J. G. Kirton (Totara), Messrs Satinders and Ford, Misses Irvine ; and J. Hooper; musical monologue by Mrs C. Thompson; and recitation ,by Mrs W. Aitchison. Community singing, was also thoroughly enjoyed. The accompaniments were played by Mrs C. Thompson. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr Gillespie, Mesdames C.' Thompson, G. Anderson, Campbell, Misses V. Cameron, and Gillespie. Arrange-, ments were made for the birthday party to be field on July' 14. The delegates to the North Otago Provincial Executive are Mesdames Marshall, Aitchison, and A. M'Millan. Miss M'Kerrow, of .Hampden, gave a; very, interesting and instructive lecture on 1 first aid, at the conclusion of which Mrs Marshall moved a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, which was carried by acclamation. A very enjoyable entertainment was then given by Mesdames W. James and- Campbell. Clothing was received, for relief of distress, and parcels for the depot may be left at the homes of Mrs Reid- and Mrs Trotter. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. M‘Millan, J. M’Millan, J. BudgC, and J. Watson. The president (Mr A. J. Ross) occupied the chair at the annual meeting of toe Otepopo School Reunion Association hold in the Herbert Hall,. The president gave a resume of the year’s activities,. which had been very successful. The. annual report and balance sheet were adopted. ' _ Junior Division. —Miss Stevenson 113 35—78, Mrs M’Beath 99-19-80. OAMARU PLUNKET SOCIETY The annual meeting of the Oamaru Plunket Society was held yesterday afternoon, Mr T. A. Munro presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report - disclosed that the society and its branches had made satisfactory progress, the aims and objects being faithful); upheld. It was hoped that parents of Plunket babies would become members and so lessen the responsibilities of the committee in the raising oL necessary funds. During March Nurse Malcolm resigned, Nurse Slater being transferred to country work and .Nurse Isbistcr appointed to the town. A subbranch had been formed at Waitaki Hydro in December. Miss Pattrick (directorgeneral of Plunket nursing) visited Uamani and was entertained at the JNortn Otago Women’s Club rooms, Mrs lorrester (vicc-prcßidcTit of the society) presiding. NEW ZEALAND LEGION A meeting of members and others who may be interested in the New Zealand Legion will be held in the Wear Street Hall on Wednesday, June 28, for the purpose of inaugurating the educational side of the legion’s activities by the formation of study circles. A very interesting evening is assured those who attend, and no charge will be made for admission. A special invitation is also extended to ladies, who are eligible for membership to the legion. DUNTROON GIRLS’ AUXILIARY A very successful sale of work was held by the Duntroon Girls’ Auxiliary, and the takings from the evening exceeded expectations. A concert was given by the Tokarahi Concert Party, the items being greatly appreciated. The Rev, Mr Steele thanked the performers for the items and all others who had assisted. LOYAL ALFRED LODGE N.G. Bro. Hancox presided over a large attendance of members at the quarterly meeting of Loyal Alfred Lodge. Arrangements were completed for the holding of a debate early next mqntlv A Hutch auction was held, by which a substantial sum was raised for general funds. MAGISTRATE’S COURT The weekly sitting of the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday afternoon before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. Under proceedings by the borough inspector (Mr A. F. Crump), R. A. Turvey, Clyve Collett, A. S. Blackledge, and Jack Beatty were each fined ss, with costs (10s), for riding bicycles at night without lights. John Paton Meikle was fined 20s, with costs (10s), for driving a car along Thames highway at a greater speed than 25 miles per hour. Stanley Smart, on remand, was charged with keeping liquor for sale, with carrying on -the business of a brewer without a orewer’s license, and with obstructing Sergeant Hall in the execution of his duty,—Sergeant Hail appeared for the police, Mr J. H. Main for the Customs Department, and Mr J. E. Farrell for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty to all the. charges-—Mr Main said that,the defendant’s premises had been kept under observation for a week, as the reisult ox which a search warrant was executed, a quantity of liquor being seized. The defendant had no means of support known to the police. The liquor seized was admitted to be beer, and an analysis of the beer was submitted. The Labour Inspector (Mr E. S. Macgregor) said the defendant, registered as unemployed on September 26, 1931. As he had a motor car and a telephone at his house, and had purchased a wireless set, the case was considered by the committee, and his relief work was discontinued on June 20, 1932.—Constable Voice gave evidence of keeping the premises under observation from May 2 to May 9, when 146 men, excluding the family and tradespeople,went into' the premises during seven days. He gave particulars of men going to the back of the premises. They weie considered to be consistent drinking men. —Constable Tretheway gave evidence of the execution of the search warrant on May -9, and also a warrant under the Customs Act. He gave particulars of glasses containing dregs of ■whisky and beer, of the finding of 57 full bottles of beer, 467 empty beer bottles, a bottle of gin, a bottle of whisky with a measurer, two 36gallon casks of beer, _yeast, inalt, and brewing utensils. —William John M'Stay (collector of Customs) and Sergeant Hall corroborated the evidence of Constable Tretheway, Sergeant Hall also stating that the defendant had been arrested for obstructing the police by upsetting a cdsk of; beer.—Mr Farrell, for the defence, addressed the court at length, submitting that there had been no evidence of the sale of liquor. Constable Stewart had visited the premises some time ago, and found nothing illegal, and the police could' have obtained direct evidence from the men as to whether they had liquor, instead of asking the court to consider circumstantial defendant gave evidence that he engaged in. doing odd jobs and selling tear, He brewed beer for drinking only, and he had a number of friends -who called to see a “ charoplane ” he was erecting in the yard. They also called to hear the results and the description of racing over the wireless. — The hearing was, adjourned till this morning.

NORTH OTAGO BOWLING CENTRE

A. meeting-of the Easter Tournament Committee of the North Otago Bowling Centre was held last night, Mr A. Robertson (president) occupying the chair. , Accounts totalling £42 4s lid were passed for payment. The secretary submitted a financial statement in connection with the Easter tournament, showing a highly satisfactory result. The chairman said that expenses had been curtailed as much as possible, and taking all things into consideration, they could congratulate themselves on the efficient running of the tournament and the excellent financial result. It was agreed to pqy the greenkeepers 10s a day for additional work .during the Easter tournament.
