TUAPEKA MOUTH GOLD LEAD
TO THE fSDITORi Sib— By the reports of the above discovery I notice that the monopolists have been busy pegging'out special claims, etc., till very likely alb available ground is already applied for. On any old river bed lead every chain along it should be a claim if thq spirit of the Mining. Act stands for anything. The original prospectors richly deserve’ a reward claim.. The rest of the lead' should be individual claims of a chain. If a mile of lead is get-at-able, that would mean 80 claims, each held on a miner’s right. They could easily c6-operate to put through a tail race in the deepest of the old channel, that being the natural drainage. Special claims of large areas in such a case with great expenses stated for development are only camouflage for monopoly, and should be strongly opposed. Suppose there is a mile and there are 80 miners about there, let them form a "co-op.” and decide by lot their order of pegging; repeg the mile of _ lead that way and have the best possible legal advice opposing the big areas. The mile could be worked on the co-operative plan with share and share alike division of gold won. If 80 homes were in going order till the claim was worked this would be different from most big company affairs. > Should four or five miles be obtainable, as across the Cromwell Flat, look at the number that could be profitably employed, and perhaps making enough profit to start them in some other line.' Anyone already holding a claim in New Zealand should be debarred unless there, were sufficient area to supply all applicants. The lean times and heavy taxes make some such plan necessary if the lessons of our surroundings are to be worth anytning. I am, etc., Miner.
