PROPOSED QUEEN CARNIVAL

' PUBLIC MEETING HELD GENERAL COMMITTEE APPOINTED. A public meeting was held in the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon for the purpose of electing committees in connection with the proposed Queen Carnival in aid of a fund for the relief of distress in the city. The Deputy Mayor (Cr J. J. Marlow) presided over a-good attendance. The sub-committee which was set up at a previous meeting reported having discussed the methods to be adopted m organising a Queen Carnival, and suggested that, at the outset, an Executive Committee of five (exclusive of the chairman) should be appointed to supervise the organising of the movement and to co-operate with the organising secretary in carrying out the details. It was suggested that eight queens might be nominated, representing the military, sports, retailers, manufacturers, radio (which might combine with the musical section), municipal, theatres, and allied trades. The respective committees controlling the activities of these sections would appoint a representative to a General Committee, who would in turn keep in touch with the executive and the organiser m respect to all proposals, especially in the matter of publicity and advertising. This would obviate clashing and waste of money. All money raised by these sections would be paid in to the treasurer through the organiser, who would credit each section with its value in votes. The poll will be announced daily and made public through the press and by means of flags on some building in the centre of the city, and over the air. When the poll closed on a date to be fixed the result would be made known and the coronation ceremony, which would be arranged by the executive with ■ the assistance of the General Committee, would be carried out. Attractions such as the Amusement Park might be jointly conducted, each section taking control of one or more days. Each Queen Committee would be allowed to conduct its own campaign, subject to its programmes being approved. With a view to keeping the expenditure down to the lowest point, however, it would be necessary for all orders such as printing,' stationery, circularising, and other matters, which would lend themselves to bulk handling, to go through the organiser’s office; each section to be debited with the cost incurred by it. Cr Marlow said that at a meeting held in the morning in the Mayor’s room the feeling had been expressed that the' carnival should be gone on with, and, judging by the attendance there that afternoon, he considered that they would be able to make the scheme successful. It was felt that it would be advisable to give people something for their money. Mr A. E. Ansel.l, M.P., suggested that the scheme should not be confined to the city, but should embrace all the districts round Dunedin, where there was also a great deal of distress. He thought there should be a country queen, and he felt sure that the people in the different districts would take the matter up enthusiastically. _ . After some discussion, the question was left open, with a resolution to the effect that a Queen Carnival should be organised, the funds to go into the Mayor’s Fund for the relief of distress. The sub-committee’s report was adopted. The following executive was set up:— Cr J. J. Marlow (chairman), Messrs 11. Harris, S. Pitt, W. G. Kindley, H. L, Paterson, and Major Mead. Mr G. A. Wycherley was appointed organiser. It was decided that the General Committees should consist of the executive and one member from each of the Queen Committees, with power to add. MOVIE QUEEN CHOSEN.

Representatives of the theatres and allied trades recently invited Mrs R. S. Black to stand as Movie Queen in the Queen Carnival, and last evening Mrs Black signified her willingness to do so. So far as is known, no other names have been announced in connection with, the carnival, but it is expected that the nomination of a Service Queen will be put forward at a meeting which is to be held in the Returned Soldiers’ Association rooms this afternoon.
