Port Chalmers waterfront was •again practically deserted yestef day, there being rio vessels at . the wharves, with the exception of three Union Company ships which are on the laid-up list. ' The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Progressive League was held on-lion-day night in the Borough ~Council Chambers;;': The Rev. W.' H. Roberts preSi< Mri' W. J* Wilson said the committee of the league considered that conveniences should be provided at the cmldferi’s playground. A penny in the slot gas ring would probably pay for Rseß on summer ' afternoons. It was hoped the council would see its way to improve the children’s playground in the direction indicated.—Mr ;T. Mathewson eridorsed what had been said,, adding that mothers made a picriic outing with the children to the playground'.—lt- was decided ‘to pla,ce the matter before the council.: ■ " ■ ■ " The fine state the recreation ground had been brought to was commented on, and some exception was taken to the fact that four football matches should have been played on it in one week in very wet weather. The Borough Council should take control of the. ground and regulate the playing of football, especially in wet weather. —The chairman said the league did not wish to force the council’s hand.—Mr Mickle pointed out that the council had two delegates on the league, and they would be pleased to make the position clear. —It was stated that football matches on Sundays should not be played; during the hours of Divine .service in the churches. The terinis ’courts were not used during those hours. There was no intention to prevent visiting sailors from playing, apart from .the hours stated. The league decided to endorse the action of its committee. Mr W. Campbell, referred to the desirability of having a stonewall built from the Scott cairn for a distance of about 80 yards along the top of :the quarry. Messrs J. Thomson, Dr Edgar, A: J .Coleman, J. M'Elwee, ,W. Madigan, and Ni Dodds supported the suggestion in the interest of safety to motorists. It was specially • needed on foggy nights. —lt was resolved to write to the council asking that something be done. It was decided to advocate the duplication of the railway, line from St. Leonards to Sawyers’ Bay. It was pointed out that married relief workers could be employed on the duplication instead of being sent to camps in the backblocks. The men would be working near their homes, and the work was of a valuable nature. Several speakers .strongly, supported the proposal, which ,it was decided should be referred to the Otago Expansion League, asking that body to enlist the active collaboration .of public ■ bodies in the city. The Borough Council would also be asked to give its support. It was resolved that the Borough Council be asked again to approach the Railways Department in regard to enlarging (he accommodation for passengers at the Mussel Bay Railway Station, and that the matter be brought to the notice of Mr Ansell, M.P. The need for a footpath along the road from Boralase corner to the railway bridge was again discussed. It was decided to ask the council to put the position before the West Harbour Council, and to ask the Sawyers’ Bay League to assist.' ■’*■'. - ; '

Mr N. Dodds pointed out that it would be a convenience if the stamp slot machine wag made accessible up tp' 8 p.rn, on Sundays. The league decided, to refer the matter to the council with a iview to the council approaching-the- postmaster.

It was decided that the council’ be asked to ascertain whether the' parapet of the bridge on the Sawyers’ Bay road could be. lowered, as it obstructed the view; of approaching motorists, npd several collisions had taken place. Other matters discussed were the need for tar-sealing the, south end of George street and drifting sand from the Mussel Bay.; reclamation.
