THE F.A. TROPHY

CANTERBURY v. OTAGO Since Otago wrested the F.A. Trophy from Wellington in 1931 the challenge games played in Dunedin have brought the Association football code more into public favour, and following on the remarkably fine display witnessed in the Wellington-Otago match last Saturday week in the first challenge match of the season, the next challenge for the trophy, which will be played next Saturday at the Caledonian Ground against the Canterbury representatives, should be equally a s good and draw a record attendance. This will be Canterbury’s third attempt since 1931 to gain possession of the trophy, and . although twice previously defeated by Otago, the players from the sister province displayed a class of football that fully extended the local eleven and provided spectators with exciting play. The Canterbury team ag announced includes at least five of last year’s team, all of whom have fine records in representative football, The Otago selectors have dropped four of the Otago players who played against Wellington recently, and the new blood should considerably strengthen the side. The team has been kept in strict training, and the public can rest assured that a fast and keen game will result. The winners of this match will have to meet Auckland in the next challenge. ■•■,,, . . Commencing at 1 o clock, a curtainraiser will be played between a Southland representative team and a junior Otago team. It is some years past since a junior Otago representative side has had an opportunity of playing before the public, and their ' reappearance on Saturdav should be of interest. Mr A. Bowie, of Dunedin, has been appointed referee for the trophy game, and Messrs A. Riach and W. P. Smith linesmen.
