DAWSON-CABALLERO

FIRST CONCERT TO-NIGHT Messrs Peter Dawson, the worldfamous baritone, Hubert Greenslade, accompanist, and Tapia-Caballero,, solo pianist, arrived from Christchurch yesterday, and will give the first of three concerts in the Town Hall to-night, under the direction of Messrs J. and N. Tait. The box plans for the three concerts are now open at the Bristol Piano Company, and 1000 seats may be reserved at 4s each and 500 seats at 2s may also be reserved at the Rialto Tea Rooms. To-night’s programme is published in our advertising columns. According to an authoritative Christchurch critic a feast of music to suit all tastes awaits Dunedin music-lovers to-night. This critic wrote: “De Pachmann, John Coates, and Peter Dawson are noted for their little platform pleasantries. They appear to enjoy giving a recital as much as their audiences enjoy listening to them, and their generosity in regard to encores is boundless. Peter Dawson’s reception at the Theatre Royal last night, where a capacity audience of 1800 greeted him, is proof positive of his popularity, and if he sang one encore he must have sung at least a dozen. Mr Dawson is singing even better than he did two years ago, with a voice that appears to improve like good wine, and with a supreme art that few Englishspeaking singers rival. As before, he interpolated some delightful humorous asides, and prefaced certain songs with a little story. One of the great factors of Peter Dawson’s success is that he has a happy knack of compiling programmes to suit every conceivable taste, and he takes his audience into his confidence with the same cheery informality as if he were among a group of friends in a drawing room.” Of Tapia-Caballero the same authority wrote: “ Tapia-Caballero’a appearance was awaited with impatience, but his exit was accompanied by tokens of success that have rarely been surpassed. His numbers ranged from Beethoven to Debussy, taking in plenty of Liszt and Chopin. The power of penetration both musical and emotional which this artist displayed, his appreciation of the style of each composer, and his unsurpassed technical equipment sent the capacity audience into raptures.” Mr Hubert Greenslade, who acts as accompanist for Mr Dawson, was a student at the Trinity College of Music from 1925-31. He was elected Bambridge Scholar in 1930. There will be further concerts next Thursday and Saturday evenings.
