MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

QUALIFICATION OF CANDIDATES THE CHRISTCHURCH INQUIRY (Peb United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 19. Following protests based on inquiries made by the Christchurch Citizens’ Association suggesting that three members of the newly-elected City Council were irregularly enrolled as city electors, a committee of the council made an investigation of the cases and a report was before the meeting of the council tonight. The report declared that the Rev. J. K. Archer was regularly enrolled and did not discuss the other councillors. The committee recommended that certain alterations should be made in the law governing local elections as follows:

(1) That ail supplementary rolls should be open for inspection immediately after the closing date, and that three days should be allowed after the closing of the rolls for objections; such objections to be heard and determined by a magistrate.

(2) That it should be made compulsory for every candidate for election to make a formal declaration under the Justices of the Peace Act that he or she is qualified and that the candidate is duly on the roll and correctly described therein.

(3) That the nominations be advertised and that three days be allowed after the closing of the nominations for objections to be lodged against any such nominations; the objections to be heard and determined by a magistrate. The report was adopted.
