: A very successful concert in aid of the local football club was given at Momona on Saturday.evening by the Jimsie Fraser Concert Party, assisted by the Brandon Vaudeville Troupe. The hall was packed, and every item encored. The concert opened with a community sing, led by Mr H. Currie, assisted at the piano by .Miss Ethel Mathieson. This was followed by a bagpipe solo by Piper Gordon Crichton. Other contributions were:—Sean triubhais, Miss Netty Pullar; humorous dialogue—Misses Phyllis and Kitty Eekholf: comic solo. “ Roderick M'Kenzie,” Mr H. Bell; Irish' hornpipe,Miss Netty Pullar; “ The Cuckoos,” members of Brandon’s Vaudeville Troupe, presenting “Cornedj' Interruptions”; vocal solo, “Loves Ship,” Miss Eileen Hawley; Paul Reno, who gave a clever 20 minutes’ comedy juggling act; vocal solo, “Piper of Love. Mrs Charles Samson; tap duo dance— Misses Kitty and Phyllis Eekhoff; vocal solos. “Home" and “Sally,” Miss Eileen Hawley. At the conclusion of the concert Mr M. Costello thanked Miss Fraser and party for their efforts, saying that the funds would be considerably benefited as as a result, Mr R. Currie replying on behalf of the company. Dancing was indulged in. until midnight. Miss Ethel Mathieson was the official pianist, and Piper Gordon Crichton supplied the bagpipe music. Mrs E. A: Hotchkm, honorary general secretary of the Empire Service League, who has returned to Dunedin from a tour of the south, reports having met with great success. Before leaving Invercargill a telegram of protest was forwarded by Mrs Hotchkin, on behalf of the league, newly established there, to the Acting Prime Minister (Mr J. G. Coates) protesting against the very large quantity of goods coming from Japan into Southland. The aim of the Empire Service League is to give its own people the first chance to provide the goods New Zealand wants, and the goods the British Empire needs. The foundation of the movement was laid in Dunedin over two years ago, and ■ince then the general secretary has carried out a “ Buy New Zealand and British Goods ” campaign from Auckland to Bluli, giving talks, and forming branches. , Over 500 branches, with a membership ot 160,000, have linked up in New Zealand, and the league is also linked with the Empire Crusade of London, of wmch Lord Beaverbrook is the head.
