MILTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILTON, June 19. FARM HOMESTEAD FIRE. The insurances on “Glenkilrie farm homestead, near Milton, which was completely destroyed by fire last Friday morning, were £250 on the furniture in the General Accident and Life Insurance Company by the occupier (Mr George G. Woodhead), also £.300 on the residence in the Standard office by the owner, Mr Woodhead’s father. YOUNG FARMERS' CLUB. The local branch of the Farmers’ Union has decided to invite Mr J. E. Davies, organiser of the young farmers clubs, to visit Milton with a view to forming a branch club locally. These clubs are sponsored by the Agricultural Department to carry on the work of the boys’ agricultural clubs after they leave school. GOLD PROSPECTING. A party of four men, known as “ The Black Reef ” Syndicate, has recently commenced gold prospecting operations m Manuka Creek district, on the tributary known as "Canada Creek. Ihe claim is situated on mining reserve at present leased by Mr Henry Adams. The water race and dam are now finished, and sluicing operations will be commenced this week.
The men are working under the Unemployment Board’s subsidised gold prospecting scheme, and they report that the prospects for good yields are very encouraging. PERSONAL. Mr D. M'Gregor, of Milburn (a member of Bruce County Council), was admitted to Dunedin Hospital on Friday suffering from injury, to one of his eyes. He w.as engaged cutting a hawthorn tree last week, when a branch sprang back and struck him on the eye.
