The Samoan correspondent of the Press Association writes from Apia on June 8: The King's Birthday was celebrated by a public holiday on June 3, distinguished visitors being the Governor of American Samoa, Captain Lahdenberger, and Mrs Landenberger. Royal salutes were fired by the shore battery and also from the U.S.S. Ontario, which was in the harbour. Kava was served at a function in the court house and speeches were made by the Administrator (General Hart), Mr I. Carruthers, High Chief Tuatagoloa, Captain Landenbergpr and a Samoan chief from Pago Pago. Wreaths were laid on the graves of the British and American sailors killed during the Samoan troubles of 1899. a visit being paid to Mulinuu for this purpose.
The death occurred on June 3 of MiLeslie Partridge, bacteriologist and chemist, at the Apia Hospital. Mr Partridge was only 36 years of age and the news of his death was received with, genuine sorrow by the whole community. The funeral was largely attended and a firing party fired three volleys at the graveside, after which the "Last Post" was sounded.
There have been no developments of importance since Mr 0. P. Nelson returned to Samoa, and no trouble is apprehended. Several chiefs have been arrested for exceeding the time allowed them to visit Apia and refusing to return to their villages. News of the honour of knighthood conferred on Colonel Allen, the former Administrator of Samoa, was received with great satisfaction by the European community.
