SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

Port Chalmers has had an animated appearance to-day, by the presence of the Aldinga, City of Hobart, Lord Worsley, Queen, and Geelong steamers. The gale of »the last four days has now subsided, and the vessels on the beach are being got off. During the last of it, the schooner Cecilia got foul of the Zambia, and carried her foremast away. - , COMMERCIAL. A meeting of the tobacconists of Dunedin took place last evening at the Shamrock Hotel for the purpose of fixing the 'retail price of tobacco, in consequence of the advanced rates in Melbourne. The following prices were agreed upon:— Twist Tobacco .. 12s, per lb, 9d. per fig Honey Dew 10s. per lb, 2s. 6d. per tig 10 S .;..-. 10s. per lb, lOd. per plug Aromatic 12s. per lb, 3s. per plug Cut Tobacco .... 9d. per oz. We are informed that by the last mail the Rev. D. M. Stuart has received a communication from Professor Miller, of the Edinburgh University, in which the Professor 'announces that he has engaged a gentleman to come to Otago to take the position -of agent to the Total Abstinence Society. In making the selection, Professor Miller was assisted by the President of the Scottish Total Abstinence League, and the Rev. Mr. Aurcott, of Glasgow. Professor Miller speaks in the highest terms of the person engaged, Mr. John W. lago [Jago], and says that he has every requisite qualification for the office. He is to start for Otago about the end of April. We regret to learn from the letter of our Wellington correspondent, that Mr. Baker, who was for some time connected with the Native Mission at Otago Heads, was on board the Pole Star, which is supposed to have been lost on her passage from Napier to Auckland. Mr. Baker had recently been appointed Resident Magistral ■'. in one of the Native districts, and was on his way to assume the office. Our Gold fields' correspondent sends us an account of a violent gale, which has made sad havoc among the_ frail buildings which abound on the diggings. We lately drew attention to the frequent instances of obvious perjury, which are of almost daily occurrence in the Resident Magistrate's Court. This evil has assumed so serious a character, as at last to elicit from his Worship, a determination to make au example of the offenders. . . .
