It is often pointed out that, the only commercial undertaking 1 that has prospered in France since the economic crisis began to be felt seriously is the Municipal Pawnshop, .popularly known as "Ma Tante" ("My Aunt"). This prosperity, however, has now caught the eagle eye of Budget makers, and recently the Chamber of Deputies voted a Bill suppressing one of the most valuable privileges of the Credit Municipal—that of not being obliged to pay any stamp or registration dues on the sums of money advanced ou pledges. It is now stated that, in practice, the new rule will deprive borrower* of such a large proportion of the sum lent to them that they will be extremely reluctant to visit a " Monte de Fiete."
