Some of the former battlefields in France appear to be extremely dangerous places in which to live at present. In certain districts, it is stated, hundreds of live shells which have been dug up line the road sides, the department charged with the task of disposing of the heaps being too busy to remove them immediately. In the Soissons region rustcovered shells and grenades are constantly emerging from the soil and all are placed by the road-side to await removal. In the neighbourhood of the famous Moulin de Laffaux hundreds of shells are thus laid out and in the single commune of Terny there are 120. In the latter district six people have been killed and several injured in the past few months. The responsible authorities state that they cannot keep pace with their work, and that until more funds are forthcoming it is impossible to respond even to the most urgent demands.
