SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB

RAMO WINS CHIEF EVENT . (Fkou Ous Special Kepokikk.) TIMARU, June IS, ; The South Canterbury. Jockey Club's winter meeting was held in dull and cold, weather. -There was an excellent attendance, and the card provided some first-class : racing.- The . track was quite firm and fast, and some smart gallops were recorded during the day^ Morena and Magna Charta dropped out of the Pukaki Hurdles,; which proved to be a good betting race. Polling Day : was a popular fancy, but he failed to stay on, and Night Cap, putting' in a strong run from the last hurdle, got up to beat Gold Knight in the last couple of strides. . Antrim Boy ran a good race and might have been closer at the finish but for striking the last hurdle. Errantry scored rather w-ell in the Southburn Stakes and proved too good for the opposition. Royal Escort was a strong order' for the Wai-iti Trot, and he won well, at the business end from Smoke Screen, Good Companion, and Iron Man, ,who w;ere close up in a good finish.- , The Prince Edward Handicap proved to be one of the best races ever seen on the course..: The scratching of Don Jose and Royal Sceptre reduced the field to 10 runners, and after passing. the distance several appeared to- hojd a good chance of winding. Ramo stayed on best in a fine finish and beat lianelagh by a short half-length. Steeton and Zeebrugge were right up witli the second horse, and Mount Boa, who looked dangerous at the distance, faded in the last bit into fifth place. Valves and Barrington were taken out of the. Pareora, Steeples. . Deportment broke a fetlock after crossing the double in the back stretch before completing a circuit. Peterette was in charge when making the far turn for home, but she commenced to tire, and Diamond Jack and Night Parade raced to the front. Night Parade carried Diamond Jack off at the second last jump, and this left Peterette an easy winner from Dukla. Slaunlathe fell at the- last jump, and Night Parade was taken back to complete the course for third place. Peterette scored a lucky win, as both Night Parade and Diamond Jack were going much better when they ran off. . Black Jester beat a good favourite in Great. Minto in the, Winchester Trot Handicap, in'which "Lena Bingen "did not

stay on so well as the two that led her past the post. Polydora was regarded as a good bet for the Temuka Hack Handicap, but she had all her work cut out to beat Heather Glow by a short head. Silver Sight, Tea Garden, and Double Shot finished close A good day's racing concluded with Silver Streak drawing out at the finish of the Seadown Handicap and beating Merry Peel and Hurlingham. who finished on well under their big weights. Palantua faded in the final furlong, and Master Anomaly also petered out a long wav from home. • > During the day £8152 went tnrough the totalisator, compared with £8842 10s at lest season's winter meeting.
