DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS

ALTERATION IN CURRICULUM SUGGESTION STRONGLY OPPOSED The executive of the School Committees 1 Association held its monthly meeting on Thursday evening at the Y.M.C.A. The attitude of the department in suggesting an alteration in the curriculum of district high schools was discussed at some length and it was unanimously agreed to forward a protest to the Minister, director, and local members of Parliament; the consensus of-opinion being that the alteration would be inimical to the best interests of scholars and parents, especially in the case of those people most seriously aifected by present conditions who would not be able to provide necessary funds to enable children to be transported to other centres, there to continue courses already entered upon which they would be debarred from pursuing at district high schools if the suggested alteration was gazetted. Further, it was considered that the department would be defeating the objfect aimed at—the prevention of *the drift from country to town. Neither, it was held, could the department claim it as an economical measure as the transference of pupils from district high schools to secondary schools would demand a higher capitation grant. It was felt that there was no justification for the alteration of existing conditions which had been working satisfactorily.
