ANTI-CAMP MOVEMENT The first meeting of the anti-camp executive and council met in the Bijou Hall on Thursday night. Mr J. Irving presided over a good attendance of delegates from groups, men on sustenance, members of trade - unions, and women s representatives. It was agreed to form the various committees as follows:—Organisation—Messrs Collins, Seidlands. Heron, Terry, M'lntyre (convener). Annison, and Mesdames ,R eeves . ancl Spence; Trade Union—Messrs Rainbow, Robertson, Spence. Vernon, and Rhind; Propaganda—Messrs M'Neill, Richardson, Kelly Powell, M‘Arthur, and Irving. Ihe following resolution was carried unanimously:—“That a deputation approach the Mavor (the Rev. E. T, Cox) for the use of the Town Hall for a public meeting of protest.” Messrs J. Townley, M. O’Rourke, and C. M‘Arthur were elected to approach the Mayor.

. A ASSISTANCE FOR MARRIED MEN

The Mayor’s relief organisation is doing all in its power to assist married man who intend to proceed to camp. Applications for assistance in the way of footwear and clothing must be made throug.i the district depots, and will be treated as urgent. As the Public Works Department gives some days’ notice to men selected for these works, applicants should have ample time in which to prepare for their departure. It has been nointed out by the Unemployment Board that men in the camps are no longer on the No. 5 scheme, as they receive six days’ work per week; but the Mayor’s Relief Committee has decided to continue assistance to the wives and families by way of coal and wood subsidy until wages become regular. It is recognised that the men have certain initial charges to meet out of their, first month’s pay, and it is hoped that this small item of assistance will help to alleviate the burden. , ’ . APPEAL BY MAYOR ' The following urgent appeal has been issued by. the Mayor (the Rev. E. 1. Cox) Owing to the shortage of food, distress in the city is very acute. Thousands of cihldren are insufficiently nourished, to say nothing of men and women. That they are ill-clad and illwarmed also goes without saying. The

first need of human beings is to satisfy hunger. Last week tim Central Mission had to close down its depot temporarily for lack of support. rive hundred applicants for food last week had to be turned away. The representatives of the social organisations —the Rev. Bryan King’s Mission, St. Vincent de Paul, the Presbyterian Social Service Association, the Central Mission, the Salvation Army, and Blacket lane have waited on me to emphasise the necessity of something being done, and done immediately, to relieve the situation. They are unable to cope with the distress. I therefore appeal to the citizens to help. The money is urgently needed for food. Towards this relief I have to acknowledge the receipt of £IOO from Mr Arthur Barnett, per Dean Cruickshank. A public meeting will be held in the Council Chamber at 4 o’clock on Monday to forward the effort. No. 5 DISTRICT The concert to be given in the Coronation Hail, St. Kilda, to-morrow evening promises to be very popular. “ The Regal Four,” assisted by Mr Charles Smith (elocutionist) and Misses Ethel M. Hadfield and J. Ellis (pianoforte), will supply .the programme. “The Kepal Four ” will be heard in duets, ana quartets. ’ The accbmpanist for the evening will.be Miss Alice Wilson. ine proceeds are in aid of the funds of the St. Kilda . Unemployed Association and the Mayor's Relief Depot. Admission will be by silver coin. ■ « CENTRAL MISSION APPEAL A survey of the CentraTMission’s financial position has revealed that to carry out the winter programme of relief and maintain the social activities now urgently needed, £SOO ig,required within the next few weeks. Warm clothing, footwear, and particularly food, is required. Ihe Central Missio,u does not share in any contribution to the Mayor’s Central Relief Fund, and the work is carried on by voluntary public subscriptions. The depression necessarily limits this appeal to those who can really afford to support the work. . The expenditure to date in the rebel work of the mission has been approximately £2OOO, and the income £llOO. The staff has decided that the debit balance must be-made up before the extensive relief work for the winter is carried out. Mr Neale, appeals to the public to send donations to the Central Mission office so as to enable the work to be proceeded with. It might be mentioned that 400 families come for. assistance every week. SOUTH DUNEDIN DEPOT At a recent meeting of a few representative young men and women' a committee was fonhed’ for the purpose of raising funds for the ladies’ section of the No. 4 South Dunedin Unemployment Depot. At that meeting it was decided to hold a variety entertainment in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall, during the first‘week in July, to be followed by a fancy dress ball. ' , . For the entertainment some talented artists have offered thgir services and the programme has been carefully selected so that it will appeal to all tastes; • Every effort is being made to ensure that the performance will be well worthy of the support of the public on its merits. it is scarcely necessary to labour the point of the existing distress and the duty of the community to help .alleviate it, and this effort is being made with a view to rendering the performance of this duty a pleasure. The Rev. Scott Allan, Canon Button, and Mr F. H. Wilkinson have agreed to act as trustees of the fund created by the proceeds obtained.
