PEDIGREE STOCK SALES

AWARDING OF PRIZES RIGHTS OF A. AND P. ASSOCIATIONS. (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., June 16. The reported tendency of offering prizes for the best stock at private stock sales, and thus weakening the fights of A. and P. shows as the mam bodies for determining the merits of pedigree stock, was debated at a conference of North Island A. and P. associations held here to-day. \The question arose from a recommendation of the secretaries’ conference to the effect that the conference should aim at securing legislation to amend the Agricultural and Pastoral Act, making it impossible for mercantile firms and/other organisations to hold shows in connection with pedigree stock sales. Several delegates opposed the idea of restricting such activity, claiming that it did not in any degree influence the importance of the awards of merit made at A. and P, shows. The prizes offered at peridgee stock sales were awarded by competent judges. There was no danger of practice influencing, the status of A. and P. shows, and it should be remembered that there _ was a danger of having too much legislation. It was stated that the secretaries’ viewpoint was that there was,.a danger of shows being held in conjunction with pedigree stock sales instead of the sales being held in conjunction with the shows. The secretary of the conference simply desired to bring this point under the notice of the associations considering that the position would require watching. After the question had been debated at some length the conference decided to refer the question to the executive for consideration.
