WOMEN’S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION

A meeting of the Middlemarch branch on Monday afternoon last proved the most successful held this yen'-, and there was a record attendance. The president, Mrs F. James, welcomed two new members, and also extended a welcome to Mrs M. Kinney, president of the Hyde branch. The attraction for the afternoon was the presence of Miss Reid and Miss Crowe, of the home science extension department. Miss Reid delivered an inspiring address on the work of her department, giving moat interesting demonstrations. All present thoroughly enjoyed her talk, and on the motion of the president, accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

The monthly meeting of the Clyde branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday evening. the president (Mrs Annan) being in the chair. Mrs Rowley, a visitor from the Hawea branch, gave an interesting account of the activities of her branch. Mrs Annan spoke of her visit to the conference recently held in Dunedin. The meeting endorsed the resolution passed at the conference that Otago was not m favour of division into smaller executives. The meeting conferred with the Fruitgrowers’ Association regarding the sending of boys to the Education Week to be held in Dunedin this month. Three boys were nominated to be sent. The roll call was-answered by a humorous story, some of which caused much merriment. The members of the Fruitgrowers’ Asso r ciation were • entertained at supper. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdamos Bould and Hollows and Miss Bodkin.

The Tokarahi and Island Cliff branch celebrated their first birthday on Friday night, a large attendance of friends and members from adjoining branches being present. The evening took the form of a carnival dance which went with a good swing till the early hours of the morning. Cards were played by some of the elder folk. The president (Mrs Duthie) welcomed the guests and called on the first president (Mrs R. Simpson) to address them. Mrs Simpson spoke of the work done by the branch for the past year. Mrs Meek, the provincial president, also spoke on the work of the Women’s Division throughout the districts, and on lighting the candle on the birthday cake wished the branch many happy returns of the day. Mrs Butt (Ngapara branch), Mrs Harvey (Dnntroon branch), and Mrs Hutton (Livingstone branch) also spoke and congratulated the branch on its first birthday. The birthday cake was cut by Mrs R. Simpson and the candle was presented to Mrs Simpson by the president as a token of her loyal support for the past year. After supper the birthday cake was cut up and handed round. The singing of “ Auld Lang Syne ” brought a pleasant evening to a close.
