Mr A. Gill was a passenger by the through express yesterday. Mr W. E. Cleavin left by the through express yesterday for Wellington, where he will give evidence before the Tariff Commission on behalf of the New Zealand Wax Vesta Company. Mr H. B. f Skinner left for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Detective E. W. Turgis, formerly attached, to the local detective staff, and now stationed at Auckland, is at present on a short visit to Dunedin.
Mr H. P, Desmoulins was a passenger for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Mr Hubert Carter, the well-known Christchurch tenar, has been engaged by the Grand Opera Club of Dunedin foj its forthcoming production of "II Trovatore.”
S A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that at a meeting of the New Zealand Licensing Reform Association Archdeacon Williams, of Paihia, wa? re-elected president and Mr D. M. Findlay vice-president. The following mem hers of the executive were re-elected:— The Rev. E. M. Cowie, Messrs ■M. A. Carr, J. M'Donald, W. Perry, J. F. Atkins L. 0 H. Tripp, D. Madden, and A. Young, A Press Association telegram from Gisborne states that from 140 applicants, including engineers now resident overseas, the Poverty Bay Power Board appointed Mr Geoffrey T. Cuthbert, who is now in the head office of the: Public Works Department, as its engineer. A Press Association cablegram from London states that Captains R. G. Irving, H. Wells, A. Wilson, W. Tinsley (Australian Staff Corps), and Captains W. G. Gentry, D. T. Maxwell, C. S. J. Duff (New Zealand) have qualified for appointment, at the staff colleges at Camberley and Quetta. The actual selections will be announced later.
A very enjoyable evening was spent on Friday last by the employees of Messrs Ross and Glendining’s mantle factory, at their rooms above the factory. There were 120 present, the guest of the evening being Mr W. H. J. Ledgerwood, who was retiring after 22 years’ service with the firm. Mr H. M. Harrould, manager of the factory, presented Mr Ledgerwood with a handsome gold watch, suitable inscribed, and Mrs Ledgerwood with a crocodile handbag. The evening was spent in games and dancing.
