VALUABLE ESTATE

WAIRARAPA SHEEP FARMER. The will of Mr D. M. Sutherland, sheep farmer, of Hinakura, Wairarapa, wa* recently admitted for probate purposes. The estate was sworn at £82,000. Mr Sutherland, who was aged 79, died at Ngaitu Station, Hinakura, on April 27. He was the son of Mr Alexander Sutherland. who came to New Zealand from Scotland in 1849. Mr D. M. Sutherland was born in Wellington, and on the death of hie father entered partnership with hia brother, the late Mr William Sutherland. They took up the Ngaitu property, a very large estate, which was later subdivided into four properties, and which at that time was virgin country. By their efforts the brothers made it one of the finest stations in the Wairarapa district. On the death of his brother Sir Sutherland carried on the estate until 1913, when he retired from active farming and leased the property to his three sons, Messrs Alexander, William, and Kenneth Sutherland. Mr William Sutherland was killed during the Great War, and after his death the other eons worked the property. In 1906 Mr Sutherland bought a large area of land at Kelburn, Wellington, where he had a town residence. This property he later subdivided into residential sites. During the pagt few years Mr Sutherland had made a practice of going abroad during the winter months. Formerly he took a keen interest in pastoral and local body affaire in the Wairarapaj but of late lived in complete retirement. Mr Sutherland is survived by a widow, two sons, and four daughters.
